In only her freshman year Brooke Hill has already left an impression on the coaches, faculty and students at Altus High School.
Hill is a member of the varsity fastpitch softball team and has worked hard to help the team get back to being a top program in Class 5A. Despite being one of the youngest players on the team Hill continues to show sportsmanship and character in the dugout, on the field and in the classroom.
“Good sportsmanship is the number one thing to have. It is critical in a game. Without it the game is nothing. Good sportsmanship is the key to the game. After one mistake it’s hard to come back. It can change the tone of the game,” Hill said. “Character comes in when you step off the bus, or as soon as you show up to play. Warm-ups are the best time to get your character in check. Warming up before the game is the best time to get your head cleared. Character means showing a positive attitude when playing a game. It means staying engaged when something goes wrong. Only making the plays you are capable of making.”
For Hill, her teammates are more like family and they’re always ready to pick each other up.
“My teammates are like my sisters. We grow a bond throughout the season. By the time the season is about to end we all feel closer. Teammates can take you far in a game. They can pick you back up,” Hill said.
At Altus High School Hill belongs to Leo’s Club and said when she graduates in a few years she would like to attend college on a softball scholarship and major in Kinesiology or Physiology.
But for now she’s focused on making the most of her opportunities at Altus High School.
“I love when we get to travel. We get to play on different fields and discover something new. We get a feel of what it’s like to play somewhere different.”
